The program was founded by Dean Kamen in 1989, with his passion and determination to help young people discover the excitement and rewards of science and technology, making up the cornerstones of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). The 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people grades K-12 to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills. Besides the basics, FIRST also gives out over $16 million in scholarships every year to FIRST students!
The FIRST program is divided into four subcategory programs:
- Jr. FLL; available to grades K-3rd
- FLL; available to grades 4th-8th
- FTC; available to grades 7th-12th
- FRC; available to grades 9th-12th
